Donations made to Eden United Church of Christ, once accepted, are subject to the organization’s exclusive legal control. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. If contributions designated for a particular program exceed that program’s needs for the current fiscal year, or if the program is modified, delayed, or discontinued, the Church Council (Board of Directors) may, in its sole discretion, apply those funds to programs serving similar purposes or to the general operating fund in furtherance of its charitable mission.
Eden Area Foundation
The Eden Area Foundation was created as the result of a planned gift to Eden United Church of Christ. In the mid-1990s, the church accepted bequests from Gordon Oliver and Alden Oliver, who directed that the funds “be used for local church purposes.” In 1999, after an ongoing process of prayerful discernment, Eden Church created the Eden Area Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and transferred a substantial portion of the bequest to the Foundation in order to create a permanent endowment of charitable funds to benefit the Eden Area.
The objective of the Eden Area Foundation’s stewardship and development of these philanthropic funds is to carry out donors’ wishes by serving the following purposes:
To support Christian outreach programs for the welfare of the local community;
To exercise such stewardship in ways that promote Christian principles, demonstrate Christian compassion in the community, and enliven Eden Church itself.
Since 2003, the Eden Area Foundation (EAF) has granted more than $5 million to local nonprofits that serve children and youth, support people in need, and strengthen community relationships throughout the Eden Area. In 2023, EAF established the Eden Area Scholarship Program. In 2025, Eden Church renamed its board-designated scholarship fund the Nehring Scholarship Fund in honor of the retirement of the Rev. Dr. Arlene K. Nehring. To be added to an email list for Eden Area Scholarship program subscribe to the Chimes.
In 2012, the Foundation established a Planned Giving Ministry to encourage local residents to include EAF in their wills and trusts. Planned gifts are invested as part of the Foundation’s charitable endowment, increasing the resources available for annual grants to organizations serving the local community.
