Rev. Dr. Arlene K. Nehring, Senior Minister
Rev. Dr. Arlene K. Nehring has served as Eden’s lead pastor and teacher, staff supervisor, pastoral care provider, and community organizer since November 2002. Pastor Arlene was raised in rural Iowa and called to ministry at age 14. She was ordained by the Central Association of the Iowa Conference in 1988, and holds ministerial standing in the Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ. Prior to serving as Eden’s pastor, she was a member of the United Church of Christ National Staff in Cleveland, Ohio, where she served as Associate Director for the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries. From 1988-1992 she served as Senior Minister of The Park Church in Elmira in New York, and from 1996-2002 she was Associate Minister at The Old South Church in Boston. Pastor Arlene was awarded the B.A., magna cum laude, from Lakeland College, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1985; the M.Div. from Andover Newton Theological School, Newton Centre, Massachusetts, in 1988; and the D.Min. in Preaching from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1995. She holds professional certifications in organizational design from DePaul University, and she completed graduate course work in nonprofit management at Cleveland State University. During the summers of 2013 and 2014, she also completed Spanish language and cultural immersion courses in Querétaro, Mexico. Arlene and her spouse, Stephanie Spencer, live in Castro Valley, California. Stephanie (a cultural anthropologist and public health worker) was raised in the Middle East, Europe, Peru, and Virginia. She is a lay leader at Eden Church and a language interpreter and cross-cultural resource person for Eden’s Compañeras Ministry.

Rev. Pepper Swanson, Associate Minister
Rev. Pepper Swanson coordinates our Church School program (Grades K-12) and our Education, Spiritual Life, and Outreach Committee, which facilitates our Stewardship, E-Team, Fellowship, Spirit-in-Action, and other ministries. Pepper is also coordinating our communications, including the Sunday bulletin production, weekly e-Chimes, the monthly Chimes, and social media. Pepper also leads worship, preaches, and provides emergency pastoral care to the congregation when the Senior Minister is out of town. Pepper, whose previous career was in public policy and local government, came to ministry later in life.
She completed her Master of Divinity and ministerial training at the Pacific School of Religion in 2014 at the age of 52 and was approved for ordination pending call by the United Church of Christ in late February 2015. She served as ministry intern at the Community Church of San Carlos UCC and as a member of the NCNC Committee of Ministry, Section B. She has preached and taught at several UCC churches in the greater Bay Area, including Mill Valley UCC and San Rafael UCC.
Pepper’s academic background includes a Bachelor in Political Science from Willamette University and Master of Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Pepper is passionate about preaching, writing, and poetry.
She is an accomplished and award-winning quilter, who loves to hike and camp. Pepper, with her husband Scott and daughter Lia, has been a member of Eden since 2007.

Rev. Dr. Marvin Lance Wiser, Bilingual Associate Minister & Director of Community Resilience Programs
Rev. Dr. Marvin Lance Wiser began his call of service with Eden Church on June 11, 2018. His ministry portfolio is focused on youth, young adults, bilingual family, and accompaniment ministries. In 2020, Pastor Marvin began directing our Pandemic Response contracts with Alameda County Healthcare Services Agency, Alameda County Public Health Department, and Alameda County Social Services Agency.
Pastor Marvin, and his spouse, Yuliana, and their daughters, Sofia and Natalia, moved back to the Bay Area after a two year hiatus in Dallas, Texas, where Marvin served as Business Liaison and Bilingual Organizer for Workers Defense Project. Prior to Texas, Marvin served in the Field Education and Contextual Learning Department of Pacific School of Religion and taught as adjunct instructor at San Francisco Theological School. He also volunteered at refugee and immigrant rights organizations. While in Texas, the couple founded Wiser Lingual Solutions. The company provides professional language translation services to social justice nonprofits.
In 2022, Pastor Marvin completed and successfully defended his dissertation for the Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (Hebrew Bible) at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. His dissertation is entitled, Belonging to Work and Working to Belong: Dissimilation and Differentiation Among Deportables Beyond the River. Utilizing comparative Latinx studies framed by postcolonial anthropological and sociological understandings of theories of migration and ethnicity, e.g., mestizaje, and informed by labor and empire, the study derives a nuanced understanding of representations of Judean ethnicity during the Persian period as found in the biblical books of Ezra-Nehemiah and Ruth, primarily revealing that just as much as the present and future are hybrid, so too is the past.
He completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology, and Bible & Religion at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and the Master of Divinity degree at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts (now Andover Newton Seminary at Yale Divinity School). Marvin also holds certificates in International Mission & Ecumenism; Religion & Conflict; and Interfaith Leadership from the Boston Theological Institute in Massachusetts. Pastor Marvin was born and raised in Tennessee in the a cappella Churches of Christ of the Restoration Movement. He was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination, Northeastern region in 2013, currently holds ministerial standing in the Northern California-Nevada region, and he has dual standing in the Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ.

REV. ROBert (“Rob”) PARRISH, Itinerant Minister
Rev. Robert Parrish is a member and Itinerate Minister at Eden United Church of Christ, Hayward, CA. He was ordained to ministry in 1986 at a Southern Baptist Church where he served as Associate Pastor and Youth Minister while attending seminary. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from San Jose State University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Following graduation from seminary, Rob was called as a full time pastor of a church in Napa, California. Rob has three grown children and three grandsons, all of whom live in the Ohio/Pennsylvania area. He lives in Fremont, CA with his husband Launey Rivers, Jr and their Black Lab/Shepherd mix named Mattie. Rob and Launey have been together 24 years and celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary in July of 2019. Professionally, Rob is a certified public accountant and has a successful practice in Palo Alto, CA where he is a partner at Bettelon Duong & Parrish, LLP. In addition to his professional practice, Rob serves as treasurer of the Northern California/Nevada Conference of the UCC and as treasurer of Eden UCC. When Rob is not working or volunteering his time in the various leadership positions, he enjoys spending his time with Launey and occasionally riding his Harley Davidson on the back roads of California.

REV. BRENDA LOREMAN, ASSOCIATE MINISTER
The Rev. Brenda Loreman joined the pastoral staff in the fall of 2021 and offers as-needed support with pastoral care, worship technology, media and communications, youth ministry, and special administrative projects on a part-time basis.
Brenda’s first call was to the theater; she earned a BA in Drama at San Diego State University, and, after earning a teaching credential at San Francisco State University, spent nearly 15 years doing “five shows a day” as a high school English teacher.
A life-long member of the UCC, she was called to ministry while a member at Eden UCC, completed her Master of Divinity and ministerial training at the Pacific School of Religion in 2011 and was ordained at Eden in 2013. In addition to her work with Eden, Brenda serves as the Associate Pastor of Niles Discovery Church (UCC/DOC) in Fremont.
She is also a graduate of the Chaplaincy Institute’s Interfaith Spiritual Direction program and offers spiritual direction to private clients.
When she’s not at church, Brenda enjoys puttering in the garden and kitchen, traveling to new places near and far, and attending music and theater events.
An accomplished textile artist, she often has projects-in-process that take over the house. She is grateful to share her home with her partner, Mike Foster, and two feline overlords.
