Preparing the Nursery

Eden’s E-Team has a new project. They are updating the church nursery. In the weeks ahead, Co-Chair Carol Price and friends will be tossing out some of our well-loved toys and equipment and replacing them with new and gently used items.

This project is part of a plan to more fully welcome the new babies who have been born into our community this past year, including Rachel, Gabriel, Henry, and Mateo, and to prepare for babies whose names (and even whose parents’ names) are yet unknown to us.

These are exciting times, especially for those of us who love children or redecorating or both.

Questions abound: Should we repaint the room? If so, what color? How about art? What images do we envision for the walls? What messages do we want to convey to our children? How can we best provide a clean and healthy environment for multiple children of differing ages?

What about toys? What can stay and what must go? Do our toys encourage creativity and imagination or do they simply entertain?

Does our collection of children’s books illustrate diversity in gender identity, gender roles, and family forms? Do the morals and messages that these authors impart reflect the faith values that we want to pass on to our children?

These and other questions abound as we move through the creative process and prepare our nest for Eden’s next generation.

These are exciting times. This is what Advent is all about. It is about preparing a nursery—not only on our church campus, but in our hearts and homes.

Advent is about sifting and sorting. It is about tossing and selecting. It is about arranging and rearranging, so that we can fully embrace a baby, and the earth-shattering, life-changing circumstances that he brings.

Wishing you a blessed Advent,

Pastor Arlene
