Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos Fiesta

We celebrate Epiphany (Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos/Three Kings Day) one day early this year on Sunday, Jan. 5. The official day is Jan. 6.

Eden’s Tres Reyes Fiesta includes a bilingual worship service beginning at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary, including music by the Eden Choir and Cherryland Children’s Choir. A free community meal featuring traditional Mexican New Year’s food and a performance by the Jalisco Ballet Folklórico follows worship. The fiesta culminates with piñatas and gifts from the magi for all children, nursery through grade 6, who attend.

On Epiphany, Christians commemorate the magi’s pilgrimage to the manager, and we remember the strange, symbolic gifts that they offered baby Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Eden’s Tres Reyes Fiesta, like the first Three Kings Day, provides an opportunity for “a cultural exchange.” It is an opportunity to give and receive gifts that may seem odd to all who participate—as odd as frankincense and myrrh.

This is why it is a special blessing when we strive to do, as the magi did, by stepping out in faith, going to places where we have never been before, tasting food that we have never eaten, and giving and receiving gifts that might not have been on our respective Christmas lists.

This is the invitation that Epiphany presents us. It is the invitation to follow in the footsteps of the magi, and to be transformed by our encounter with the living God so that we are forever changed and we cannot return to our familiar lives by the same old well-worn path.

Here’s wishing us all traveling mercies in this and every season of life.
